A Stranger Saw a Struggling Veteran at the Airport. Days Later, He Received $184,000
July 15, 2026
What started as a quiet moment through an airport window turned into a life-changing act of kindness for a hardworking Navy veteran who never imagined the world was watching.
LaCinda Thackeray / James Blair
LaCinda Thackeray was sitting at John Wayne Airport in Southern California on May 21, waiting to board her flight home to Utah after attending a family funeral. As passengers milled around the gate, her attention drifted outside to a man working on the tarmac.
At first, he looked like any other airport employee. But the longer she watched, the more her heart sank.
Every step appeared painful. He moved slowly, carefully, yet continued lifting equipment, positioning airplane stairs, and fueling aircraft without complaint.
"I just saw somebody who needed a little bit of support and love and kindness," Thackeray said. "What really was hard for me was just the conditions he was in, and I didn't even know his story at that point."
Before boarding, she recorded a short TikTok video asking if anyone knew who the man was.
"I thought, if somebody knew who he was, could we get him retired?" she said. "I had no idea it was going to take off."
She was right about one thing: people noticed.
Within hours, the video had been viewed more than one million times. Before long, internet sleuths identified the worker as James Blair, a 64-year-old Navy veteran who has spent decades serving both his country and his community.
@boymom692 Does anyone know this man at the John Wayne Airport? Watching him work so hard, he could barely move, barely walk truly broke my heart. I know there has to be a way we can help him retire. ðŸ˜ðŸ©· #findhim #viral #delta #retirement #empath ♬ original sound - Keegan
Blair served in the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1990. After leaving the military, he worked at Los Angeles International Airport before eventually joining the crew at John Wayne Airport, where he has worked since 2006 as a fuel injector and mechanic.
Although retirement would seem well-earned, Blair said it simply wasn't an option.
"My plan was to work until I can't work," he said.
He has been dealing with serious knee problems and is trying to arrange surgery, but much of his income goes toward caring for his elderly mother, who is in hospice.
When people online learned his story, they wanted to help.
Encouraged by thousands of comments, Thackeray launched a GoFundMe with one simple goal: to give Blair the opportunity to finally rest.
Donations poured in from around the world.
A short time later, Thackeray traveled back to California to personally hand Blair a check for more than $174,000.
Today, the fundraiser has grown even larger, with nearly 6,000 donors contributing more than $184,000.
Blair says he's overwhelmed that complete strangers would give their own money to help someone they had never met.
"I'm just a person trying to do a job, trying to survive," he said. "When they're giving money they really can't spare, that amazes me. I'm just blown away."
The experience has also strengthened his faith.
"I believed in God, but I didn't really believe in God," Blair told Thackeray. "But now... it's amazing. I can't believe how God works in mysterious ways."
Although he's still working and continuing to care for his mother, Blair has already used a portion of the donations to buy himself something he had gone without for far too long: a new bed.
For Thackeray, the greatest gift wasn't simply the money—it was watching thousands of strangers unite behind one man who quietly showed up every day despite his pain.
"I felt like the world showed up," she said. "I think in these times we need people like that."
