Dog Refuses to Stop Barking and Saves Owner's Life Moments Before Home Goes Up in Flames
June 23, 2026
A New Jersey woman escaped a devastating house fire with only seconds to spare, and she says she owes her life to a determined little poodle who simply refused to be ignored.
Aida Kelly
Just before 1 a.m. on Friday, Aida Kelly was asleep in her home in West Milford when her 3 and a half year old poodle, Squilliam, began barking relentlessly.
Initially, she tried to quiet him down but he would not stop.
"He comes to my bed, goes back and forth, comes on my bed, and I said, 'Oh my God, what, what?'" Kelly recalled.
Within moments, Kelly realized her home was filling with smoke. She grabbed her beloved dog and rushed to investigate.
"I was like, 'oh my God, it's a fire,'" she said. "I run, and it was in the living room, the house already in flames."
By the time firefighters arrived at the Elm Street home, the situation had become extremely dangerous. According to West Milford Fire Marshal Michael Moscatello, crews found the fire already spreading rapidly through the structure.
The house was ultimately destroyed, and Kelly lost all of her belongings.
Yet despite the heartbreaking loss, one thing matters far more to her than anything that was inside the home.
She and Squilliam made it out alive.
Kelly has no doubt about who deserves the credit.
"The best of the best. He's my hero, my angel," she said. "He's the best."
Investigators have not officially determined what caused the fire. Kelly believes it may have started from an extension cord connected to a refrigerator outside the house.
While her home can be replaced, Kelly says the loyal companion who woke her up at exactly the right moment is truly priceless.
