Most authors dream of seeing their book become a bestseller. For one Colorado writer, that dream finally came true after a wait of four decades.

Elissa Guralnick never expected a children's vocabulary book she co wrote in 1985 to suddenly rocket to the top of Amazon's bestseller charts. But thanks to one viral TikTok video, Weighty Words has found an entirely new audience and is delighting families across generations.
"It's a strike of lightning," Guralnick said.
The book was created as a fun way to help children learn challenging vocabulary words through memorable stories and clever wordplay. Although it earned a small following over the years, it never became a commercial success.
"We really never made a dime," Guralnick admitted.
Then came an unexpected twist.
A few weeks ago, author Eli McCann shared a TikTok video reminiscing about discovering Weighty Words when he was in eighth grade. His nostalgic post struck a chord with viewers, and the reaction was immediate.
"The response was hilarious and miraculous," Guralnick said. "The book overnight became a bestseller on Amazon. I'm telling you, overnight."
Readers were charmed by the book's playful approach to language. One lesson teaches the word "scintillate" through the story of a firefly named Gloriana. Because she loves flying around lighting up the night, the other fireflies joke that she "sins till late," creating a memorable connection to the vocabulary word.
The sudden surge in popularity caught everyone by surprise. Demand became so strong that the publisher quickly ordered a new printing.
For Guralnick, the experience has been thrilling, but not because of the sales figures.
What means the most is seeing the joy the book's unexpected success has brought to the people closest to her.
"My kids are delighted, Paul's kids are delighted," she said. "In a way the whole family is getting in on this."
Her co author, Paul Levitt, has been equally amazed by the book's second chance at success.
"The number of sales today make me believe in magic," Levitt said.
He added that watching his children celebrate the book's newfound popularity has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
