What could have become an unimaginable tragedy turned into a story of hope thanks to the quick thinking, training, and determination of two deputies who refused to waste a second.
The dramatic rescue happened on May 31 in Greenville County, South Carolina. Days later, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office shared video of the incident along with a heartfelt message praising Deputy Jordan Stevenson and Deputy Connor O'Shields for their lifesaving actions.
"In a single second, life can change forever," the sheriff's office wrote.
According to the department, a young child had fallen into a swimming pool and was no longer breathing. The moments that followed were critical.
Rather than panic, the deputies immediately stepped in and did what they had been trained to do. Their professionalism and ability to act under pressure helped give the little girl something priceless: another chance at life.
The sheriff's office said the outcome could have been very different.
"Those critical moments that followed could have ended in unimaginable heartbreak. Instead, because of the swift actions, training, and determination of Deputy Jordan Stevenson and Deputy Connor O'Shields, a little girl was given a chance to keep living her story."
Officials noted that law enforcement officers never know what awaits them when they respond to a call.
"Some days it's enforcing the law. Some days it's helping someone in need. And some days, it's standing between life and death."
The department said the deputies' actions reflect the very best qualities of those who wear the badge and serve their community.
Today, one little girl is alive because two deputies were ready when every second counted.
"Your service made a difference that will last a lifetime," the sheriff's office said.
And for one grateful family, that lifetime is a gift they'll never forget.
