A Michigan family recently held a graduation celebration for their daughter Emily, but the most meaningful guests weren't classmates or teachers. They were the people whose lives she saved.

Emily Matejovitz was just 16 years old when she died in December after a struggle with mental health.
According to her mother, Becky Smith, Emily was known for encouraging everyone around her.
"She always was like the first one to cheer for her softball teammates. It didn't matter if they were winning or if they were losing."
After Emily was declared brain dead, her parents faced an unimaginable decision. As they sat together in the hospital, they asked themselves what Emily would have wanted.
The answer became clear when they learned something they never knew. When hospital staff contacted Gift of Life Michigan, they discovered Emily had already registered herself as an organ donor when she got her ID.
"She never told us," Becky recalled. "Me and my husband both looked at each other, and we said we made the right decision."
Following Emily's death, Becky wrote letters to the recipient families because she wanted to know if they were okay.
Every family wrote back.
Then, they did something extraordinary.
When Emily's family hosted a graduation celebration in her honor, the organ recipient families traveled hundreds of miles (more than 10 hours) to attend.
Among them was Landon Coleman, a teenager from Virginia who received Emily's heart.
"My name is Landon Coleman, and I have Emily's heart," he told those gathered. "It lets me do things that I couldn't have done before," he said.
Also attending was four year old Ripley Ferrell from West Virginia, who received one of Emily's kidneys.
"Getting the kidney has fundamentally changed our lives," his father, Justin Ferrell, said.
The gratitude Ripley's family feels for Emily runs deep.
"As a mother, I could not imagine losing my child. I'm so thankful that another mom helped save mine," said Ripley's mother, Audra.
The most emotional moment of the evening came when Becky placed a stethoscope against Landon's chest and listened to her daughter's heart beating.
"Breathtaking, knowing that my baby's heart still beats," she said through tears.
For Emily's family, the gathering was a powerful reminder that while their daughter is gone, the impact of her life continues every day through the people she helped save.
"Emily's story isn't over," Becky said. "She's not here, but it's far from over."
What was meant to be a graduation party became something even more meaningful: a celebration of a young life whose final act of kindness gave others a future.
