'She Was Meant to Be in My Life': Teacher Gives Foster Child the Forever Home She Always Dreamed Of
May 16, 2026
A second grade teacher in Arkansas never expected that the funny, book loving little girl who burst into her classroom singing her own name would one day become her daughter.
But after years of foster care and broken promises, one special student finally found the forever family she had been hoping for.
Lexi McClelland with Mary / The McClelland family
When Lexi McClelland first met Mary at Elm Tree Elementary in Bentonville, Arkansas, the energetic 7 year old immediately stood out.
“She was naturally funny and incredibly creative,” McClelland recalled. “She loved reading, and she had these little comments that felt wise beyond her years.”
Mary had already spent years moving through foster homes after entering the system at a young age. But inside the classroom, her imagination shined brightly. She dreamed up inventions, loved books, and once even designed a trolley system that could deliver library books across the classroom.
“As a teacher, you try not to have favorites,” McClelland said. “But she was just one of those kids whose personality filled the room.”
At the time, McClelland only knew basic details about Mary’s life, but she could not shake the feeling that the little girl was somehow meant to be part of her story.
“It felt like God led it,” she said. “Like she was meant to be in my life.”
When the school year ended, Mary was expected to be adopted by another family. McClelland was happy for her, but heartbroken at the thought of losing contact.
Then everything changed.
The adoption plans unexpectedly fell through, and when McClelland learned Mary needed a home again, she immediately stepped forward alongside her husband, Max.
“If she’s available, she is coming to our house,” McClelland remembered telling her husband.
Just weeks later, Mary arrived at their home with only a few belongings in hand. What could have been an uncertain transition instead felt natural almost instantly.
“As soon as I walked in, I was like... ‘Let’s have some fun,’” Mary later said.
By Christmas Eve in 2021, the couple knew they wanted to make things permanent. They gave Mary a children’s book about a bunny finding its forever home, with a handwritten note tucked inside asking if she wanted to officially become part of their family.
At first, Mary could hardly believe it was real.
“She had to take a moment to be like, ‘Is this real?’” McClelland said.
A few months later, on April 7, 2022, the adoption became official during an emotional courtroom ceremony where Mary was invited to tap the judge’s gavel herself.
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” Max recalled.
Now 12 years old, Mary is thriving as a middle school student who still loves reading, creativity, and making people laugh. Friends and family often compare her and Lexi to Matilda characters Matilda and Miss Honey, a comparison they happily embrace.
The McClellands have since welcomed a baby boy named Murphy into the family, and Mary has fully embraced her role as big sister.
“He’s obsessed with her,” McClelland said. “And she’s obsessed with him.”
