Teen Beats Cancer And Uses His Make-A-Wish To Feed Hundreds Of Homeless People

April 30, 2026

When 14-year-old Jude Baker was given the chance to make a dream wish after surviving cancer, he didn’t ask for a vacation or to meet a celebrity.

Instead, the Georgia teenager used his wish to feed and help hundreds of people experiencing homelessness, and now his community is returning that kindness in a big way.

Jude, from Summerville, Georgia, was only 12 years old when he was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the bones and surrounding tissue. The road through treatment was brutal.

“It wasn't even knowing I could die,” Jude said. “The chemo… it hurt.”

For his father, watching his son suffer was heartbreaking.

“I could feel his pain,” he told 11 Alive. “And as a dad, that just… it sucks.”

After months of painful treatments, Jude finally reached a milestone cancer patients dream about: ringing the hospital bell to celebrate the end of chemotherapy. That moment also meant he qualified for a wish through Make-A-Wish Georgia.

Most children choose trips, exciting adventures, or the chance to meet someone they admire. But Jude had been thinking about something else entirely.

During trips to the hospital, he often noticed people struggling with homelessness nearby. Even while fighting for his own health, their hardships stayed on his mind.

“I got out of my version of heck,” Jude said. “And I want to help others who are in a similar situation, their own version.”

According to wish coordinator Emily Campbell, Jude’s request stood out immediately.

“His only wish was to give back to his community,” she said. “That’s not a wish we even tell kids is an option.”

With the help of Make-A-Wish Georgia and local volunteers, Jude’s idea became reality. Backpacks filled with supplies were handed out, sleeping bags were collected for people without shelter, and hot meals were prepared for anyone in need in the community.

More than 300 people were helped through the effort.

Jude even made one personal rule for the day: he refused to eat until every person in line had been served first.

“I wanted to help them out because I was in a bad situation and they were, too,” he said.

Now in remission, Jude hopes his story encourages others to help people in their own communities.

“It doesn’t have to come from a wish,” he said. “You can help, too.”

His compassion deeply moved people across the community, inspiring local business owners Kevin Godfrey and Leslie Tripp Watwood to launch a fundraiser to give something back to Jude and his family.

The fundraiser’s goal is to send Jude and his loved ones on a memorable trip where they can finally focus on joy, rest, and making happy memories together after such a difficult chapter.

“This kind of compassion is rare in this world, especially from someone so young,” fundraiser organizer Kevin Godfrey wrote.

The response has been overwhelming. More than $60,000 has already been raised through the GoFundMe campaign.

Co-organizer Lacey Gilreath shared that Jude’s mother, Tori, was emotional when explaining to him why strangers were donating to support him.

“At first he didn't understand why,” she said. “But I explained because he did such a good thing, he is getting rewarded. I am so proud of Jude. I look at him and just don't know how he is so brave!”

She added that Jude has been eagerly watching the donations come in and dreaming about what the trip could mean for their family.
