Hardworking Teen’s Taco Shop Was Days From Closing — Then One Video Changed Everything
April 15, 2026
Just days after fearing he’d have to shut his doors for good, a 19-year-old taco shop owner is now serving lines of customers stretching out the door, proving how quickly hope can turn things around when a community shows up.

Last November, Alexander Quinones opened Detroit Loves Tacos 2 in Taylor, Michigan, using $5,000 of his own savings along with graduation money and a little help from his mom, Julie Stevens. It was a bold move for someone fresh out of high school, but for Quinones, it was the next step in a dream that started years earlier.
He first fell in love with the restaurant world at just 12 years old while spending time at the original Detroit Loves Tacos in Corktown, which was connected to his mother’s catering business. From that point on, he knew exactly what he wanted to do.
But passion alone doesn’t guarantee success.
Despite pouring everything he had into the business, Quinones found himself barely scraping by, making just enough to cover daily expenses and pay his one employee. Then came the moment every small business owner dreads.
“We had a difficult discussion that day. We’re gonna have to close if something doesn’t give,” Stevens said.
For Quinones, it was crushing.
“I felt like I was failing in life a little bit. I put all my money into this, I put all my time into this. So it really, really hurt me,” he shared.
Instead of giving up, he took a chance.
Quinones recorded a simple 30-second TikTok video, sharing his story and the heart behind his business.
“No shortcuts, no big investors, just me working every single day, long nights with a vision,” he said. “Everything is made fresh with love and ready to serve.”
He didn’t expect much, maybe just a little exposure.
What happened next changed everything.
By the next morning, the video had exploded online, racking up more than 430,000 views and thousands of supportive comments. Even more importantly, people showed up — lots of them.
Customers began traveling from across Michigan and beyond, including Ohio, Minnesota, and even Canada, just to try his food and support his dream.
“It was like a blessing,” Stevens said of the overnight success.
Some drove hours just for a taste.
“This place is great,” one customer said.
“Worth the drive,” another added.
Now, instead of worrying about closing, Quinones is working to keep up with demand, nearly selling out every single day.
“All I thought was a simple video, just to get my name out there,” he said. “I’m so grateful… I try and make sure that I have enough inventory, just to feed everybody.”
These days, his mom is back in the kitchen helping keep up with the rush, proud of the work ethic her son has shown from the very beginning.
“He is the first one in, the last one to leave,” she said. “His work ethic has always been stellar.”
For Quinones, the long hours are worth it.
“Restaurant’s like my passion. I love serving people with food. I love seeing their smiles. It means the world to me,” he said.
But perhaps the most powerful part of his story isn’t the viral video or the sold-out days, it’s the reminder that giving up isn’t the only option.
Sometimes, all it takes is one moment, one idea, and a community willing to believe in you.
