When parents at a Texas elementary school learned that their beloved crossing guard had been taking buses and ride-shares just to make it to work after her car broke down, they came together to surprise her with a car of her own.

Trecia Crawford — known to students and families simply as “Ms. Crawford” — helps children safely cross the street each day at Moss Haven Elementary in Richardson, Texas. For many families, seeing her at the crosswalk has become a familiar and comforting part of their daily routine.

Parents say she’s more than just the person holding the stop sign. She’s someone who greets kids with smiles, reminds them not to run through the crosswalk, and often knows parents by their first names.

“She’s part of the community,” one parent said.

But a few months ago, getting to that crosswalk became much harder.

Ms. Crawford’s car broke down, leaving her without reliable transportation. Instead of missing work, she found other ways to keep showing up for the students she cares about.

First she paid for rides through Lyft. When that became too expensive, she started taking the bus.

“I had to do what I had to do,” she said.

Members of the school’s Dad’s Club eventually learned about her situation.

"We're a group of dads that have all signed up to come together and better the students, teachers, and environment here at Moss Haven Elementary," Luke Wagner, the club's president, told CBS News Texas.

The group of fathers decided they wanted to help the woman who had spent years helping their kids. They sent out a couple of emails to parents in the community, hoping to raise some money.

The response was overwhelming.

Within just a few days, they had raised several thousand dollars.

Then came the surprise: the dads presented Ms. Crawford with a white Jeep.

The support didn’t stop there. The Dad’s Club also helped cover insurance, handle the title transfer, and even set up a few oil changes to help her get started.

For the parents who organized it, the gesture was about showing appreciation for someone who quietly makes a difference in their children’s lives every single day. Sometimes the people who keep a community moving safely deserve a little help getting where they need to go, too.
