In a time when social media can feel filled with negativity, a genuine friendship in Santa Monica is reminding people how powerful kindness can be.

David Heavens first met Frank, a 91-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, in 2023. Their lives couldn’t have looked more different—but one small act of service brought them together.

At the time, David was going through a difficult season. After losing his apartment to a squatter, he was homeless and living out of his car. Yet even while facing those challenges, he still wanted to help others.

He posted on a neighborhood app offering to volunteer two hours of his time to anyone in need around Santa Monica.

Frank and his partner responded, asking if David could walk their dogs. That simple request turned into something much more.

Frank, my 91-year-old client and Navy veteran, marched for civil rights when he was young. Now an African American is his caregiver. That’s a full circle moment. Thank you to everyone who loves and supports this page. Be kind to one another.

Raised by his grandmother, David said he has always had a soft spot for seniors. Before long, he wasn’t just helping with the dogs—he had become a caregiver and a close friend.

“David is the most inspirational person I have ever run across in my 90 years,” Frank said. “He’s just a wonderfully warm human being.”

In November 2025, David began sharing moments from their friendship online with a small audience of about 150 followers.

Within three months, those stories had reached nearly 400,000 people.

David believes part of what resonates with people is the deeper meaning behind their bond. Frank had marched for civil rights decades ago, and now David finds himself caring for him.

“It’s just a full circle moment. He marched for somebody like me. My grandmother raised somebody like me to help somebody like him,” David said. “We unconsciously created this positive movement just by being ourselves.”

Frank thinks people are drawn to their story because it offers a refreshing contrast to the tone of much of today’s news.

“I find it incredible that people really want to hear about our story,” he said, noting that so much of what people hear every day can be “so negative.”

For David, the friendship is something he treasures deeply. He says there isn’t a day that goes by that he isn’t thankful.

And Frank, reflecting on their time together, shared a hope that many readers will find touching:

“Clearly people don’t expect to live forever,” he said. “I just hope that our friendship can continue for as long as I am able to continue.”
