Family Opens Pizza Restaurant Dedicated To Hiring Employees With Special Needs

What began as a challenge for one California family became a life-changing opportunity for people with special needs.

In Alpine, just outside San Diego, the Baker family opened a pizza restaurant with a meaningful mission: creating real jobs for people with special needs. The restaurant, fittingly named Pizzabilities, was inspired by their 19-year-old daughter Grace, who has Down syndrome and had difficulty finding employment.

“Finding a job is just very hard with someone with special needs,” said Grace’s father, Josh Baker. Rather than accepting that reality, the family decided to do something bold.

With no prior restaurant experience, the Bakers asked a simple question: What does Grace love?

They answer was clear. Pizza and people.

That idea became Pizzabilities, which opened last summer and is now thriving. Grace is not just an employee — she’s a co-owner. At the restaurant, she proudly helps make pizzas, from adding sauce and cheese to topping her favorite creation: pepperoni.

The impact has gone far beyond their own family. According to Grace’s mother, Amy Baker, the response from job seekers with special needs has been overwhelming. So many individuals have applied that the family believes they could open multiple additional locations based on interest alone.

For Josh Baker, the most powerful moments come during the hiring process.

“Tears just start flowing when the kids say, ‘You mean I am really hired?’” he shared. “Then you look at their families, and they’re crying because they see their kid get to have an opportunity like the rest of us.”

Customers keep coming back too — not just because of the mission, but because the pizza itself delivers. One customer said he originally stopped by to support the cause, but stayed loyal because of how good the food was, praising everything from the sauce to the crust.

Looking ahead, the Bakers have big dreams. They hope to grow Pizzabilities to hundreds of locations across the United States — and possibly beyond.

Their message is summed up in the restaurant’s motto, printed on the back of every employee’s shirt: “Where pizzas and abilities rise together.”
