Service Dog Alerts Veteran To Silent Medical Emergency, Saves His Life

In Fort Lupton, Colorado, Army and Marine Corps veteran Hank Ford has a constant companion by his side: a 3-year-old service dog named Tommy.

Their connection goes far beyond loyalty. Ford believes Tommy quite literally saved his life.

Ford, who served 20 years in the military, including Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, has faced a long battle with PTSD. He describes Tommy as the turning point in his journey. “He wasn’t the light at the end of the tunnel. He was the light,” Ford said. “Our bond is just so strong.”

That bond was put to the ultimate test one morning this past February. After Ford’s wife left for work, Tommy suddenly began barking, pawing, and jumping on him—refusing to let him sleep. At first, Ford thought the dog just needed to go outside. But as he stood up, he realized something was terribly wrong.

“I noticed that I’m dizzy, lightheaded and really weak,” Ford recalled.

Tommy didn’t stop. He kept pawing at Ford’s chest until Ford recognized the problem—his heart was racing out of control. He rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his atrial fibrillation was so severe he might not have woken up on his own, or he could have suffered a massive stroke. His heart had to be shocked back into rhythm.

Through it all, Tommy never left his side.

“He laid on my chest for hours,” Ford said. “I believe that if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now. He saved my life.”
