Liliana Vera and Evan Jekubovich, both seniors at Southington High School in Connecticut, decided to celebrate their four-month anniversary by lifting the spirits of strangers. Inspired by a video they saw on TikTok, the couple headed to Target to pick up flowers, pens, and notecards — not for each other, but for people going through tough times.
They drove to Hartford Hospital and began placing flowers and handwritten, encouraging notes on the windshields of cars in the parking lot. The messages were simple but powerful: “One step at a time,” “Get better,” and “You’ll get through this.”
They even gave extra flowers to the parking garage attendant before recording their thoughtful gesture and sharing the video on TikTok. The clip has since gone viral, spreading their message of compassion across the globe.
“We just wanted to inspire other people how we were inspired,” Vera told NBC Connecticut. “We didn’t expect it to go viral.”
One of the people who received a surprise that night was Amel Zubeidy, who had been staying at the hospital with her daughter.
“I was at the hospital, spent the night with my daughter,” Zubeidy said. “She was there for 10 days actually, and I went to go home after a very, very difficult day, and when I got to the parking lot and saw two purple flowers with a note, it was a surprise. When I read the note, it was so nice. It gave me [a] feeling like someone felt my pain without knowing anything. It told me, you are not alone.”
Vera and Jekubovich say their goal was simply to brighten someone’s day — and hopefully spark a ripple effect of kindness.
“We both know how it is to visit people in a hospital, be in the hospital, and it’s nice to have something nice when you’re leaving when something hard is happening to you,” Vera shared. “I hope that it inspires others to do better and be the better version of themselves.”
Jekubovich added, “My mom is a nurse as well, so I hear a lot of stories about what goes on in a hospital. I think it was important to just post something that’s inspiring online so people can see that other people are doing good so they can do good too.”
