Tamie Konzier was dining at a local restaurant with her son when she met Betty, their waitress.
During their conversation, Tamie was heartbroken to learn that Betty was still working at 81 years old—not by choice, but out of necessity. She was surviving on just $910 a month from Social Security, far from enough to cover her bills.
Determined to help, Tamie took to TikTok, sharing Betty’s story in hopes that the online community would step in.
@tamie.lynn Hoping we can help this sweet lady retire! I think Jen Hamilton could help me do it but I can’t tag her! #viralvideo #fyp #jenhamilton ♬ original sound - Tamie Konzier
Tamie set up a GoFundMe with a $25,000 goal—but the outpouring of support far exceeded expectations.
Within just three days, more than 13,000 people donated, raising over $319,000 to help Betty retire.
“I’m overwhelmed with joy but like overwhelmed with all the messages because I never knew this was going to happen,” Konzier tearfully shared in a TikTok video.
"Humanity just banned together and retired this lady," one person commented on the video.
"Her story has me bawling!!!" another viewer wrote. "My grandmother didn’t retire until she was 80. I hope this woman gets to live the rest of her life peacefully and full of love and ease."
This heartwarming act of generosity proves that social media can be a powerful tool for good. Now, thanks to the kindness of thousands of strangers, Betty can finally enjoy the retirement she deserves.
