This initiative, spearheaded by Matt Reed of the First Class Children Foundation, has become a cherished tradition, ensuring that students in need have comfortable, high-quality shoes to wear.

The program began after DuBois Superintendent Wendy Benton shared a story with Reed about a young student who came to school with duct tape holding her shoes together. Deeply moved, Reed, a DuBois graduate and passionate sneaker enthusiast, felt compelled to act.

"She told me that story, and I was so moved by it," Reed told WTAJ. "I thought, I have to do something with sneakers for the DuBois School District. It’s right up my alley, I love shoes, and that’s how this whole thing started.”

Since then, Reed has made it a mission to deliver shoes to the school annually, blending his passion for sneakers with a desire to give back to his hometown.

Superintendent Benton praised Reed’s dedication, highlighting his commitment to paying kindness forward.

"One of the coolest things about Matt is that he’s a graduate from our district and 100% committed to kindness. That’s why he does everything he does for kids," Benton said.

Beyond providing new shoes, the program has a profound impact on students' confidence and outlook. Benton emphasized how the gesture uplifts their spirits: "We see a tremendous change in the kids—from their energy to their positivity. It makes a huge difference knowing that someone cares about you."

Reed believes the initiative is about more than just shoes—it’s about fostering a sense of community and empowerment.

“What I take away from this is knowing we’re doing the best we can for our community, combining my passion for sneakers with meaningful work in the district,” Reed said.
