Determined Young Lynx Wins Freedom From German Zoo

July 25, 2024

A young Carpathian lynx named Chapo has been granted his freedom after repeated escape attempts from his enclosure.

Chapo, a 1-year-old lynx whose name means "Shorty" in Spanish, is now exploring the wilds of Saxony, Germany.

Chapo was born at the Nuremberg Zoo and was initially intended for a conservation breeding program. He was transferred to the lynx enclosure of the Harz National Park, but shortly after his arrival, Chapo managed to escape over the enclosure fence.

Despite being recaptured, he continued to make escape attempts and struggled to settle down within the enclosure.

Recognizing Chapo's determination and natural instincts, park officials decided to release him into the wild as part of the "ReLynx Saxony" project. This initiative aims to establish a new lynx population in Saxony, with plans to release up to 20 big cats into the wild by 2027.

Chapo joins three other lynxes who were released in the same area during the spring. These lynxes have adapted well to their new environment, establishing roaming areas in the forests of the Western Ore Mountains. According to officials, they behave inconspicuously and are rarely seen by humans. Each lynx is estimated to hunt one deer per week, and there have been no reports of attacks on livestock.

The release of Chapo and his fellow lynxes marks a significant step in the efforts to reestablish a thriving lynx population in Saxony. All lynx currently living freely in Germany come from reintroduction projects.

The lynx is under strict European and national protection.
