The announcement was made by the Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) Foundation, a charity focused on funding health care initiatives.

Shannon Hunter, the President and CEO of SJRH Foundation, recounted the moment they received the life-changing call from the anonymous donor. Hunter revealed that the donor's own experience served as the catalyst for their remarkable act of philanthropy, prompting them to allocate the substantial sum towards alleviating MRI wait times.

Zach Kilburn, Horizon's interim vice-president of professional services, shed light on the pressing issue, disclosing that the average wait for a non-emergency MRI in the region had ballooned to a staggering 369 days. However, with the infusion of this generous donation, a comprehensive plan has been devised to expedite the process and provide timely healthcare to those in need.

The allocation of the $1 million donation is set to revolutionize MRI services across the province. Among the transformative initiatives planned are:

- The hiring of four full-time technologists, ensuring that every MRI system operates seven days a week, 12 hours a day.

- The provision of MRI training to an additional eight employees, who have committed to three-year employment service agreements.

- The acquisition of a cutting-edge requisition management solution system, aimed at centralizing and sorting all medical imaging requests, thereby guiding patients to locations with the lowest wait times.

With these measures in place, it is anticipated that average MRI wait times will plummet by a staggering 75% by the year 2026, heralding a new era of accessibility and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

"This remarkable act of generosity underscores the transformative power of philanthropy in healthcare," Hunter said in a statement.
