Teenagers Are Transforming Trash Into Lifesaving Mats For The Homeless

April 4, 2024

Today's good news story comes from San Antonio, Texas.

In a heartwarming display of compassion and ingenuity, a group of teenagers in San Antonio is turning plastic bags into sleeping mats for the city’s homeless population.

Led by the organization Teens Give Back SATX, these young changemakers are making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

"We take for granted having a bed to go home to at night after a long day of work or school and the comfort that brings us," said Addie Roberts with Teens Give Back SATX.

With this in mind, Roberts and her peers decided to repurpose used grocery bags into something invaluable for San Antonio’s unsheltered residents.

The process of creating these sleeping mats involves patience, dedication, and a collective effort. Each mat requires weaving approximately 700 to 900 plastic bags. It can take 15-20 hours to complete.

Despite the labor-intensive nature of their project, the teenagers remain steadfast in their commitment to making a positive impact on their community.

"In some temperatures, the mats can save lives by keeping people off the ground," said Rex Brien, Vice President of Emergency Services for SAMMinistries.

Indeed, the simple act of providing a barrier between individuals and the elements can make a world of difference for those sleeping unsheltered outside.

As the teenagers continue their mission to transform trash into treasure, they invite others to join their cause and make a difference.
