Corey Holt and Kat Perry were snowmobiling on Monte Cristo on Saturday when Perry spotted an adult dog miles into the backcountry.

"I'm not going to leave any animal on the mountain to starve, especially, it was obvious she had pups," Perry told Fox 13.

The couple returned the next day to find the dog and eventually spotted three Great Pyrenees puppies, about five miles from the closest road, living inside a sheep carcass that they believe the dogs had fed off of at some point.

Weber County Search and Rescue helped bring the puppies off the mountain.

But their mother was too wild to trust her rescuers, so Perry left behind 20 pounds of dog food.

"We didn't have a leash, we didn't have a rope or anything so we decided the best thing was [to] get these guys out first and then go back in and try to get her," Holt said.

"The pups were cold, shivering and wet and just a little ball of ice," Perry said.

Based on the breed, investigators believe the mother was a sheepherder that ventured off to give birth to her litter sometime in the summer.

The puppies are now at a Great Pyrenees rescue group based out of Montana. Volunteers are still searching for their mother.
