My Pay It Forward Opportunity Backfired

I was in the line behind a man who was making a small purchase. I heard the cashier ask if he had any cash on him or if there was anything else he wanted as the minimum eftpos was $5.
I stepped forward and told the lady to add his purchase to mine. She scanned my items, putting the total to about $8.
Then he reached over, tapped his card and said the business will pay for those!
My pay it forward opportunity backfired 😆
Such a small, simple gesture and I know we both walked away with a smile on our faces.
