A Girl I Barely Knew Literally Saved My Life
By a friend • October 8, 2019
So in 2016 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Antiphospholipid Syndrome. Basically what it means is that my blood has too much clotting factor, and because it took so long for the doctors to diagnose it, there is damage to my arteries and also my kidneys and liver (it was diagnosed because I ended up with blood clots in my right kidney and then weeks later in my liver).
One night not long after I was diagnosed, I had bought a massive amount of painkillers and benzodiazepines from a guy I knew, and I had booked a room at a hotel, and I was planning on committing suicide. At the time I was homeless, I had been dumped recently, and I felt so alone, and I didn't want to fight this disorder that was destroying my body.
At around 9pm that night a girl I had met maybe 4 times sent me a message asking if I wanted to come hang out. So I figured why not.
When I got there, we got talking and I told her about my diagnosis, and about being homeless, and how I was struggling. I didn't tell her that I was suicidal, just that things were hard. She immediately offered me her spare room to stay in, and offered to help me with my medical appointments.
3 years later, and I have met the man of my dreams, and gotten married, and my health is improving. I finally told that girl (who is now one of my best friends) that she stopped me from killing myself that night, and she broke down.
She told me that she didn't know why she invited me over that night, but she is glad she did.
