The Father Who Never Left His Son Behind
January 20, 2026
They once said Rick Hoyt would never think, never communicate, and never live a meaningful life.
His father, Dick Hoyt, refused to believe that was the end of his son’s story.

Years later, when Rick was a teenager, his parents discovered that his mind was fully alert. Using a special communication device, Rick was finally able to express himself. One day, he typed a simple sentence that changed everything: he wanted to participate in a charity run to support a fellow student. Dick, who was not an athlete and had no training, said yes. He pushed Rick in a wheelchair through the race and finished it.
That one decision became a lifetime commitment. Dick realized that when Rick was racing, he felt free. From that day on, Dick pushed, pulled, and carried his son through marathons, triathlons, Ironman races, and even the Boston Marathon often qualifying with times that elite runners struggle to achieve. Dick ran while pushing Rick in a wheelchair, swam while towing him in a raft, and cycled with Rick in a custom seat attached to his bike.
Together, they completed over 1,000 endurance events.
Dick didn’t see himself as a hero. He said he was simply doing what any parent should do: listening to his child and showing up every day. Even as Dick aged and his body weakened, he kept going because stopping meant taking freedom away from his son.
Dick Hoyt passed away in 2021. Rick Hoyt passed away in 2023. But their story lives on as one of the purest examples of love, purpose, and partnership. They showed the world that limitations don’t define a life, love does. And sometimes, the strongest force in the world isn’t muscle or speed, but a parent who refuses to let their child be left behind.
