A Couple Invited A Homeless Man In On Christmas — And He Never Left

December 26, 2025

A simple knock at the door on Christmas Eve turned into a lifelong act of kindness for one couple in Wales.

On December 23, 1975, Rob Parsons and his wife Dianne were busy preparing for Christmas at their home in Cardiff when they heard someone at the door. Standing outside was a homeless man carrying all of his belongings in a bin bag.

Rob and Dianne were just 26 years old at the time, but they didn’t hesitate. They invited the man inside, gave him a warm meal, and listened to his story. As the evening went on, Dianne turned to her husband and quietly said, “Ask him to stay with us tonight — it’s Christmas.”

Rob did.

That one invitation changed everything.

The man, Ronnie, didn’t just stay the night. He became part of their family.

What began as a single act of compassion grew into a bond that lasted decades.

Ronnie lived with Rob and Dianne for the next 45 years until he passed away, having spent nearly half a century surrounded by love, dignity, and belonging.

The story has since touched hearts around the world, showing that sometimes the greatest gifts aren’t wrapped under a tree — they arrive unexpectedly at the door.

@bbccymruwales Could you imagine inviting a stranger into your home on Christmas Day? 🎄 That’s exactly what Rob and Dianne Parsons did in 1975 when they opened their door to Ronnie - a vulnerable man standing outside with a bin bag and a frozen chicken. They cooked his meal, offered him a bath, and invited him to stay for Christmas. But Ronnie, who was autistic and alone, never really left. What began as a simple act of kindness became a 45-year bond of love, care and family that changed their lives forever. #BBCNews #Christmas #ChristmasStory #ChristmasDinner #Wales ♬ original sound - BBCCymruWales
