Today I learned that bears without their fur look like giant rats.

This is Dolores.

She lived at the Leipzig Zoo in Germany in the early 2000s and suffered from a rare condition that caused hair loss.

Gerard Baars, director of the International Bear Foundation, said he had never seen such a condition before.

"I could hardly believe it is a bear although I have been dealing with bears all my life," he told the BBC's Europe Today program.

The baldness did cause some itching so keepers applied ointments to soothe her skin.
