It all started with a dirty sock.

Xep Campbell says she found her 10-year-old daughter's dirty sock on the bathroom floor on Thanksgiving evening just before bed.

"I decided not to toss it in the hamper but instead see how long it would stay there, sort of a sociological experiment," Cambell said.

A week later, the sock was still there, so she decided it needed some recognition.

"I made this little label hoping it would motivate her to pick it up."

Instead, her daughter sent her a text message asking if she had done that.

"When I got home she said, 'I made a pedestal for it!'"

"She gamed my shame. I figured as long as it was on display, it deserved an audience so the barnyard animals arrived. They find it very fascinating."

Then out of nowhere, a monolith appeared.

The mother-daughter battle continued, each surprising one another with more elements to liven the display.

Cambell posted the photos to Facebook, not expecting them to receive much attention.

The post has been shared nearly 150,000 times.

"I honestly did not except this post to go viral - it was just another silly thing we did," Cambell said.

"My daughter and I have a wonderful, communicative relationship. We are very silly together and understand the importance of being ridiculous and absurd."

"I should point out this is a *very small* bathroom. I asked when the sock might go away. She said 'how long do art exhibits usually last?'"
