A photo of wild ponies standing guard over the body of a mare hit by a car proves that it's not just humans who feel emotions over the loss of a loved one.

The nine-year-old pony died at the side of the road after being hit by a car on January 8 in New Forest National Park, England.

Sarah Simmons snapped the photo after passing the scene of the accident and posted it on social media, asking people to "slow down" on forest roads.

"Broke my heart this morning seeing another pony KILLED on the forest road. Even more that her friends were looking on," Simmons wrote on Facebook.

"I'm sorry to the commoner who's lost the pony, I hope it's not someone's pony I know but I hope by posting this it may make people realise that it's not just the owner who it upsets but their herd members too. SLOW DOWN DAY/NIGHT ON FOREST ROADS THESE PONIES have more rights to these roads than you do."
