He Couldn't Find What His Son Wanted Anywhere, So He Did This... And Now I'm Totally Jealous
April 30, 2014
His son asked him for the mask from the movie The Mask but they just don't sell it in stores anymore. At first I felt sorry for him, but after seeing this... I am 100% jealous. The great thing is, you can do it too!
He started out with the general shape made from Crayola Model Magic foam. You can buy a big tub of it from Staples for about $15 but Wal-Mart sells individual packs for even less.
Use a butter knife to get the lines.
Lay the mask over a mannequin head to hold the shape and dry for a couple days, turning it over halfway through to dry both sides. If you don't have a mannequin head, use a ball, watermelon... figure it out!
Now it's ready to paint. Use acrylic paint and any brand will do.
The foam is still slightly squishy when dry so it will need a few layers of a hard clear coating to strengthen it. Painting first.
Now for color. First add a layer of black paint to get the shadows in the cracks.
Dry brush over with brown.
Then the green and gold...
And it's ready to wear!
But be careful...
A pretty awesome idea considering he was able to make it for under $30. And I guarantee this one looks and feels way cooler than a cheap plastic one the toy stores would sell!
