This Guy Turned His Jeep Into A House On Wheels To Travel Africa For 2 Years
June 2, 2016
A few years ago, Dan drove a Jeep from Alaska to Argentina.
"I learned a lot on that trip - about where I want to go and what kind of vehicle I want to live in," he wrote on Imgur.
After years of saving and planning, Dan decided to turn his Jeep into a house on wheels to travel Africa for 2 years.
Meet Dan!
The first thing he needed to do was make more room. He removed the back seat and the roll bar to make room for cabinets and a fridge.
He's going to be doing a lot of driving, so he mounted an extra 13-gallon gas tank on the back.
He designed and built a water storage, pump and filtration system.
Underneath the Jeep he mounted a 12 gallon tank for drinking water. Then he made a rock guard to protect it.
The Pop-Up Roof
The view from upstairs. The wooden slats slide in and out for standing room and his mattress.
Solar panels
The solar panels are wired into a charge controller that's wired to the second battery.
"I left it for a week with the fridge running, and the battery was at 14.5V so the solar is easily keeping up with the fridge."
Rear table and cutlery holder
He put a map of Africa on the hood and will be painting in lines as he moves through the continent.
The planned trip will be roughly 80,000 miles and take him about two years.
And he will be traveling with Sid the Sloth, the official mascot.
If you're interested in what Dan's doing, he will be updating his website TheRoadChoseMe.com as he makes his way around Africa. You can also follow his journey on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
