These Worms Eat Styrofoam And Could Be Solution To Mounting Plastic Waste

December 20, 2017

The mealworm, which is the larvae form of the darkling beetle, can survive on a diet of Styrofoam according to two companion studies co-authored by Wei-Min Wu, a senior research engineer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford.

Upon reading these studies, The Thought Emporium decided to run an experiment with a different species to see if this is something more insects could do — and sure enough they can!

Could feeding plastic waste to bugs be an efficient way to deal with our mounting waste in landfills?

Watch the worms in action below.
