Orphaned Baby Hippo Falls Asleep in Rescuer’s Arms
May 12, 2026
After losing his mother, a tiny baby hippo named Bumpy spent at least a day curled up beside her body before rescuers from the Kenya Wildlife Service found him.
By the time he arrived at the Nairobi Nursery, he seemed exhausted, heartbroken, and simply relieved to be safe.
That first night, Keeper Simon placed his mattress on the floor so Bumpy could sleep beside him. The little hippo curled into the crook of his arm and finally drifted off peacefully.
From that moment on, Bumpy never wanted to leave his Keepers’ side.
