Texas Fisherman Forms An Unlikely Friendship With A Water Snake Named Big Bertha

Most people would probably back away if they spotted a water snake slithering toward them near a fishing pond. But for one Texas man, it’s become part of his daily routine and the beginning of a truly unusual friendship.

In the small town of Blum, Texas, Tim Jones often spends his time relaxing beside his pond with a fishing rod in hand. Over the years, though, the peaceful fishing spot has become home to someone else too: a water snake he affectionately named Big Bertha.

And according to Jones, the two have formed quite the bond.

“I don't name animals usually, but there's something about her,” Jones said. “I started calling her Big Bertha.”

Jones, who loves fishing, began sharing some of his catches with the snake years ago. Before long, Big Bertha started recognizing him and swimming right up for a snack.

Now, their interactions are something straight out of a nature documentary.

“The snake will even come take the fish out of his hand,” Jones said. “She'll come right up my leg and take a fish and she'd crawl in my lap if I'd let her.”
