'You're a Unicorn': The Dementia Caregiver Who Just Stunned The American Idol Judges
January 27, 2026
Brooks, a caregiver from Bel Air, Maryland, is winning hearts both on and off the stage. By day, he works at a care home for dementia patients, where he regularly plays guitar and sings to bring comfort and joy to residents. By night, he’s pursuing a dream that recently led him to the American Idol stage.
Soft-spoken with a gentle presence, Brooks auditioned with a voice that immediately caught the judges by surprise. His tone was delicate, emotional, and unlike anything they expected.
“Do you understand why we’re so excited?” Luke Bryan asked during the audition. “No matter what you sing, it’s going to sound beautifully unique.”
Carrie Underwood was equally moved, telling Brooks, “You’re a unicorn.”
