They Rolled Down The Window To Listen. What They Found Was A Veteran, A Pig, And A Cry For Help
November 28, 2025
Sometimes, the biggest acts of kindness start with something incredibly simple: listening.
That’s exactly what happened in Portland this week when members of Portland Fire & Rescue crossed paths with Tony James, a Navy veteran who had fallen on hard times. After a series of heartbreaking tragedies—including the loss of his partner—James found himself homeless and caring for her beloved pet pig.
While many people might have walked by without noticing, these firefighters didn’t.
“They stopped and rolled down the window and asked me what was my situation,” James said. They didn’t judge. They didn’t rush. They just listened.
And then—they helped.
