July 17, 2014
13-year-old Nick Lamb, who is deaf, was sleeping inside his Indianapolis home when a fire erupted.

The 13-year-old boy was excited because he was finally old enough to stay home alone. He usually wears hearing aids but didn't have them in as he napped, so he didn't hear the home's smoke alarms, the local NBC-affiliate reported.
As the fire grew, Lamb's 2-year-old pit bull named Ace licked his face, waking him up to a room full of smoke.

"My dog licked my face and woke me up," Lamb said. "I woke up and the entire house was covered with smoke and we ran out in the backyard."

Nick's mother, Lindsay Bernard, called the event "amazing, because if [Ace] wouldn't have been there, he probably wouldn't have even woke up."
