Her Wedding Was Canceled, So She Invited 11 Strangers to Ireland
November 2, 2026
When Bridget Devaney's wedding plans fell apart, she found an unexpected way to turn heartbreak into something beautiful: she invited 11 women she had never met to join her in Northern Ireland, and together, they created memories none of them will soon forget.

Bridget had once imagined exploring Northern Ireland's breathtaking coastline with her fiancé as they celebrated their elopement. But after he suffered a medical emergency, their relationship ended, leaving her with a wedding that would never happen and memories of a future she had once looked forward to.
For a while, the plans simply remained on hold.
Then, in April 2026, an email from her wedding photographer prompted Bridget to reconsider what came next. Rather than cancel everything and walk away from the experience, she began imagining a different kind of celebration.
With encouragement from a friend, she posted an anonymous invitation on social media, asking women to join her for a week in Northern Ireland.
She wasn't looking for bridesmaids in the traditional sense. She was looking for people willing to show up, share an adventure and celebrate a day that hadn't gone according to plan.
The response was extraordinary.
Hundreds of women expressed interest, and eventually, 11 signed up for the trip. They came from the United States, Canada and Wales, each bringing her own story and reasons for saying yes.
There was just one catch: these women were agreeing to travel across the world for someone whose name and face many of them didn't even know.
"When these women signed up for this trip, they didn't know my name. They didn't know what I looked like. They didn't know anything about me," Bridget told BBC News NI.
For some, the invitation arrived at exactly the right moment.
Janae Pettit, a design consultant from Utah, was approaching her 40th birthday and wrestling with feelings about getting older and where she stood in life. The unusual invitation offered her a chance to do something meaningful for herself while connecting with other women.
"I wanted to go and meet these women and support this non-bride. I wanted to do something outside of myself," she said.
Shana Johnson, who lives in Minnesota, had a different reason for taking the leap. Many of her friends were busy raising families and traveling with their partners and children. Bridget's invitation offered the chance to explore somewhere new and meet people she might never otherwise encounter.
And so, what began as a somewhat improbable idea became a real adventure.
In October, the women gathered in Northern Ireland for a week of sightseeing, laughter and growing friendships. They explored the spectacular Giant's Causeway, walked beneath the trees of the Dark Hedges and visited Londonderry.
Some had spoken online before arriving, but meeting face to face was another matter. There were nerves and unfamiliar faces to remember. Yet it didn't take long for the group to find its rhythm.
"It was kind of like we were all long-lost friends," Shana recalled.
Soon, the women were sharing an experience that felt less like a gathering of strangers and more like a reunion of friends who had somehow found one another.

Then came the day that had originally been reserved for Bridget's wedding.
Instead of letting the date serve as a reminder of what she had lost, she chose to make new memories in the very places she had once hoped to visit with her fiancé.
The women dressed up for a special photoshoot against Northern Ireland's dramatic scenery, transforming the would-be wedding into a celebration of friendship, connection and new beginnings.
Photographer Rob Dight, founder of Epic Love Photography, had been involved in the original plans and had extended Bridget's booking after learning about her fiancé's medical emergency.
He had photographed elopements for more than a decade, but this was unlike anything he had experienced before.
As he watched the women laugh, embrace and celebrate together, he was struck by the closeness they had developed in such a short time. In fact, he discovered during the shoot that many of them had met in person just three days earlier.
"It was just so wholesome," he said.
For Bridget, the photographs captured something far more meaningful than a replacement for the wedding she had imagined.
"There was such a level of uplift, like I could turn anywhere and get a hug if I needed it," she said. "Everybody was there for everybody that day."
The week also included a wellness session focused on new beginnings, giving the women an opportunity to reflect on their experiences and what lay ahead.
The emotions came pouring out.
"There was not a dry eye in the room," Bridget said.

And although the trip eventually came to an end, the friendships didn't end with it. Weeks after returning home, the women were still exchanging messages, with plans for future trips already taking shape.
For Bridget, the experience changed more than the way she remembered her canceled wedding. It also challenged the idea that difficult times must be faced alone.
She had once struggled with overthinking and connecting with others. Now, she had a group of women scattered across the world who had willingly stepped into her life at a vulnerable moment, turning a painful chapter into something filled with laughter, support and belonging.
Her biggest takeaway was simple: meaningful connections can happen when we're willing to take a chance, even when doing so feels uncomfortable.
