A wrong turn on the way home turned into a life-saving detour when a stranger spotted a house on fire in Georgia and rushed inside to wake a sleeping family of 14 before it was too late.

James Burke was asleep in his recliner on Saturday night while his wife, Larita, their 11 children, and one grandchild slept throughout the house. Then, he woke up to an unexpected visitor standing in his living room with an urgent warning.

“The next thing I know, some guy was telling me in my living room, ‘Hey, you’ve got to get out of here. Your house is on fire,’” James recalled.

The stranger, identified as Casey, had been driving home to Alabama with his son when a GPS mistake sent them down Highway 114 near Lyerly, Georgia. He had never traveled that road before, but the unexpected detour put him in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

As Casey approached the top of a hill, he spotted the flames and knew he couldn't simply keep driving.

“He said that he knew that something kept bringing him down our road,” James explained. “When he saw the fire from the top of the hill, he knew he had to take action.”

And he did.

Casey rushed into the burning home and helped get the family's 12 children out to safety. He also helped get firefighters to the scene.

For the Burkes, his arrival may have made all the difference.

“If it had been another five minutes, it would’ve been a different situation. We wouldn’t have made it,” Larita said.

Thankfully, the entire family survived. But while they escaped with their lives, the fire left them facing the loss of their home and belongings.

The morning after the frightening ordeal, the family began to experience another kind of unexpected rescue: the kindness of their community.

Calls and messages poured in from people wanting to know how they could help.

“It’s overwhelming how much, immediately, people called to ask, ‘Hey, what do you need? What can we do?’” James and Larita said.

The couple said the outpouring of support showed them just how much compassion surrounded them.

“There are so many wonderful people in this community that have reached out,” they said. “I didn’t realize this county was as wonderful as it was until something like this happened.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
