Woman Adopts Gas Station Cashier's Baby, and the Two Women Become Like Sisters

A chance encounter at a Georgia gas station brought together two women who would become family in a way neither could have expected.

When D’Amber Davis learned that Katelyn Sparks, a young cashier she had gotten to know during her regular visits, was pregnant and unable to care for her baby, she felt an unexpected calling to step in and help.

What began as an offer to adopt Katelyn’s unborn son would eventually grow into something even more meaningful: a loving home for a little boy and a sister-like bond between his adoptive mother and birth mother.

D’Amber had been visiting the same gas station in Central Georgia almost every day, where she regularly chatted with Katelyn while she worked behind the counter.

When she realized Katelyn was about 33 weeks pregnant, she learned that the young woman was struggling with the prospect of raising the baby herself.

D’Amber had considered adoption before, but she had planned to wait until her children were older and her finances were more stable. Still, something about Katelyn’s situation made her feel that she could make a difference right then.

“In my mind I'm just like, instantly, I got to get this baby,” D’Amber recalled.

Her son felt the same way. After hearing about the situation, he told his mom, “Mama, we gotta get that baby.”

The next day, D’Amber returned to the gas station and asked Katelyn if she would consider letting her raise the baby.

Katelyn agreed, setting in motion a journey that would change both of their lives.

Helping a Mother-to-Be

As they began making plans, D’Amber discovered that Katelyn had not received prenatal care during her pregnancy.

Rather than simply preparing to welcome a new baby, D’Amber also stepped in to help Katelyn get the medical attention she needed. She helped her find a doctor and took her to an obstetric assessment.

According to D’Amber, the assessment went well, and the pregnancy appeared to be progressing normally.

When the time came, Katelyn gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Nolan, weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

D’Amber welcomed Nolan into her family and quickly fell in love with the little boy.

“I thought he needed me, but I really needed him,” she said.

But while D’Amber became Nolan’s mother, she never wanted his birth mother to disappear from his life.

Two Mothers, One Family

From the beginning, D’Amber wanted Katelyn to remain involved in Nolan’s life. She believed he deserved to know where he came from, and she wanted him to grow up understanding the important role his birth mother played in his story.

Over time, the relationship between the two women grew into something neither could have anticipated.

Katelyn came to see D’Amber as more than the woman who adopted her son. She became a trusted friend and a sister-like figure, helping Katelyn reconnect with her own mother and giving her more time to spend with her other son.

“She's more or less like my big sister,” Katelyn said.

For D’Amber, keeping that connection alive has always been important.

“I'm his mom, but that's his bio mom, and he will forever know that,” she explained. “I'm making sure that he knows exactly where he comes from. I would never take that from him.”

Katelyn is grateful that she can remain part of Nolan’s life and see him growing up in a loving home.

“I can still see he's happy, safe, and thriving even with me being around,” she said.

Showing the World What Family Really Means

D’Amber has shared parts of their journey on TikTok through a page called "Love Makes a Family", where she hopes to encourage others by showing how their family came together.

Her message is simple: family is about much more than sharing the same DNA.

“To be a family, y’all don’t have to have the same DNA or blood,” she said. “It’s just about being there for a person, a child.”
