High School Softball Players On Opposing Teams Realize They're Sisters

October 7, 2026

Two girls playing on opposing softball teams noticed they looked remarkably alike, but they soon discovered they shared something much more meaningful.

They were sisters.

Samantha Rensvold, 19, had always known she was adopted. She also knew she had a younger sister somewhere out there, but because her sister's adoption was closed, Samantha had no idea how she could ever find her.

Then, during a softball tournament in Montana the mystery suddenly began to unravel.

Samantha was in the middle of a game when one of her teammates pointed out a player on the opposing team.

She looked a lot like Samantha.

“I hadn’t seen her close up yet when my teammate was pointing out to me,” Samantha recalled.

When Samantha finally got a look at the girl, she was stunned, but she didn't want to get her hopes up.

“I was like, ‘There’s no way that this would happen to me right now,’” she said.

Samantha decided not to approach the girl after the game because she was afraid of being wrong. But when she returned home, her mother suggested they take another look at the tournament roster.

That's when they noticed the girl's name.

Kyann.

Samantha's mother immediately recognized it as the name Samantha's birth mother had given her younger daughter.

“My mom was like, ‘That has to be your sister. That’s not a coincidence,’” Samantha recalled.

The next time the teams crossed paths, Samantha was playing right field while the girl, Kyann Dean, was sitting in the stands with her family.

Samantha could hear her mother talking to Kyann's mom about what they had discovered.

The two mothers began comparing the details they knew about the girls' biological family. They confirmed the name of their birth mother and the hospital where the girls had been born.

Everything lined up.

“There was no way we weren’t [sisters],” Samantha said.

After spending their entire lives apart, the two sisters had somehow ended up at the same softball tournament, playing on opposite teams.

And the similarities didn't stop with their appearance. Both girls had played volleyball in high school. They both wore number 6 and played the same position.

They even share the same little giggle.

“It’s like we didn’t know what to feel because you’ve waited your whole lives for this moment,” Samantha said.

The Story Behind Their Adoption

Samantha and Kyann were adopted as babies and grew up in Montana, but their families lived about 400 miles apart.

Their biological parents were just 19 and 17 when Samantha was born. She doesn't know exactly why she and her siblings were placed for adoption, but she believes her biological parents may have felt they were too young to provide the life they wanted for their children.

“We don’t know the exact reason, but I’ve always just assumed that they were too young and they wanted to give me a better life that maybe they couldn’t give me,” she told People.

Samantha later learned she had a sister through their biological brother, who had tracked down Samantha's family after his own adoptive family learned about their biological relatives.

But she had never met Kyann.

Now, after years of wondering about the sister she knew was out there somewhere, Samantha finally had the chance to meet her.

Where They Are Today

The sisters now attend college in different states, with Samantha in Washington and Kyann in North Dakota. They don't get to see each other often, but they stay in touch and hope to spend more time together.

For Samantha, finding Kyann has brought a sense of closure she had been waiting for her entire life.

“When I would talk to people about my situation with my biological family, I’d always have to explain ‘I have a sister,’” she said.

“But now it’s so nice to be able to put a face to her and to meet her, hang out with her. It doesn’t leave any doubt or wonder in my mind.”

After years of knowing she had a sister somewhere in the world, Samantha finally found her.

And somehow, they ended up meeting on opposite sides of a softball field.
