Hero Mom Jumps Into Dangerous Surf to Save Surfer Face Down in Water

A mom was walking along the beach when she saw a surfer get slammed into the rocks by a massive wave. When he disappeared beneath the water, she didn't hesitate to put herself in danger to save him.

Benita Karo was recording video of the powerful waves along a North County San Diego beach when she noticed a surfer making his way toward shore.

Then she saw the wave coming.

“He doesn’t see it. It’s massive, and it just hits him,” Karo told the California Post.

The wave sent the surfer crashing into the rocks with such force that Karo immediately started watching the water, waiting for him to resurface.

But he didn't.

Karo moved closer and saw the man floating face down in the water.

“He was knocked out,” she recalled.

That's when the mom instinct kicked in.

Still fully clothed, Karo went into the rough water and reached the unconscious surfer. As waves continued crashing against the rocks, she held him up and made sure his head stayed above the surface.

“I sat there with him, holding him, just trying to keep his head above water,” she said.

Soon, another surfer spotted them. People from a nearby beach house also rushed over, and together they were able to pull the injured man from the water and get him onto shore.

Emergency crews arrived shortly afterward and took him to the hospital. Karo did not escape the rescue without some minor injuries herself.

But her decision to jump in may have made all the difference.

The surfer, identified as Bob, has been surfing for 50 years. He was eventually reunited with Karo at the hospital, and he is now making a full recovery.

Bob called Karo a “heroic girl.”

His wife, Mary, called her something even more touching.

“She is an angel, just an absolute angel,” she said.
