Their Wedding Guests Couldn’t Make It, So Hundreds of Strangers Came Instead

A storm stranded most of their wedding guests on the other side of the highway, but instead of letting it ruin their big day, hundreds of strangers came together to celebrate with them.

Jayden Sink and Kimberly Laprad of Roanoke, Virginia, had planned a relatively small wedding on Hatteras Island in North Carolina, with about 45 family members and friends expected to attend.

Then the storm hit.

Damage to North Carolina Highway 12 on Pea Island cut off highway access to Hatteras Island, leaving most of the couple's wedding guests unable to reach them.

Jayden and Kimberly were already on the island with a handful of members of their wedding party, but their plans suddenly looked very different.

They could have called off the celebration.

Instead, a friend made a simple invitation on social media. The message read:

"Whether you’re a local, here on vacation, a couple looking for something to do, or a family wanting to get out and meet some new people, you’re more than welcome to come celebrate Jayden and his wife Kim with us!

Most importantly, a chance to come together and make a couple’s wedding celebration something they’ll remember forever.

I know inviting complete strangers to a wedding celebration is a little out of the norm, but honestly, that’s what could make this something they’ll talk about for the rest of their lives. Sometimes the best memories come from the things that weren’t planned."

People came. And then they kept coming.

What began as a small wedding quickly turned into a massive community celebration at Frisco Woods Campground, with more than 400 people showing up to watch two people they had never met get married.

Stacey Saunders, who runs the campground, offered the pavilion for the ceremony and reception, opened cabins for members of the wedding party and even volunteered to officiate.

Others jumped in too.

DJ KEL provided the music. Gwenyth Airhart volunteered as the wedding photographer. Local businesses, residents and other visitors brought food, supplies and anything else they could contribute.

In less than 24 hours, a wedding that nearly became a casualty of the storm had become one of the island's biggest celebrations.

The dance floor filled as the newlyweds celebrated alongside their original guests, Hatteras Island residents and hundreds of people who had been complete strangers just a day earlier.

At one point, the organizers even ran out of food because so many people had arrived.

But the celebration continued.

Food and other contributions kept coming from across the island.

“It just came from everywhere,” Saunders said.

And that may be the best way to describe the entire wedding.

Help came from everywhere.

People who had never met the couple gave them a place to celebrate, brought them food, provided music, took photographs, helped organize the ceremony and filled the dance floor.

One of the couple's original wedding guests, Brandon Robinson, later summed up the experience in a social media post.

“We will + everyone included will talk about this for years to come,” he wrote. “To say the absolute least. We are at a loss for words.”

“This is paradise on Earth!” he added. “You guys made it happen!”

What was supposed to be a wedding with about 45 guests ended up becoming a celebration with more than 400. The storm may have kept their original guests away, but it also brought an entire community into their lives.

And when the night was over, hundreds of strangers had become part of their wedding story forever.
