Pizza Shop Owner Sees Woman Eating From the Trash, Gives Her a Fresh Slice and Makes a Promise to Feed Anyone Who Is Hungry
August 31, 2026
A pizza shop owner in the Bronx is making sure people in need know they have a place where they can get a hot meal without having to ask for anything in return.
The note at D’Romano’s Pizza
It started when D’Romano’s Pizza owner Daniel Romano saw a woman taking food from the restaurant’s trash. Instead of looking away, Romano approached her and brought her inside.
“I grabbed her by the hand and I led her to the pizzeria,” Romano said. “I went into the oven and I got her a fresh slice.”
The woman began to cry.
Romano told her there was nothing to be embarrassed about.
“I don’t want you eating out of the garbage,” he told her.
The encounter stayed with Romano, and he decided he wanted to make sure no one else in the same situation would have to choose between going hungry and searching through a garbage can.
So he put a handwritten sign outside the pizzeria.
“To the people eating out of the garbage, I have more love for you than you think. Please tell me you’re hungry, I will give you a slice of pizza.”
The offer is simple. Anyone who is hungry can come in and receive a free slice of pizza and water.
But Romano’s act of kindness didn't stop at his neighborhood.
After people learned about what he was doing, calls began coming in from across the country. People who had never met Romano were offering to pay for slices so that others in need could enjoy a hot meal.
What began with one woman, one slice of pizza and one compassionate decision has now turned into a community effort to make sure people don't have to go hungry.
And perhaps the most powerful part of Romano’s message isn't the free pizza.
It's the reminder that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.
Sometimes, a hot meal can fill an empty stomach.
Sometimes, the kindness that comes with it can fill something else.
