She Lost Her Husband, Her Savings, and Nearly Her Hope. Then Thousands of Strangers Stepped In
June 16, 2026
A grieving widow who had fallen months behind on rent, lost money to a dishonest contractor, and sometimes went without food has been given a life changing second chance thanks to the kindness of strangers and a landscaper known for helping people in need.
Spencer and Debbie / SB Mowing
Spencer, the creator behind the popular SB Mowing YouTube channel, recently helped spark an outpouring of support for Debbie, a woman whose life had been marked by one heartbreaking setback after another. What began as a simple yard cleanup turned into a community effort that has now raised more than $650,000 to help her rebuild her life.
Debbie's struggles began when her husband was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and given only about 90 days to live. She devoted herself to caring for him full time until he passed away.
After his death, the challenges kept coming.
According to Spencer, Debbie's own health started declining while she was still coping with the loss of her husband. At the same time, she faced financial hardship and a series of devastating blows.
A contractor accepted a $2,000 deposit for tree work and never returned. A neighbor wrecked her car and did not pay for the damage. She fell three months behind on rent and delayed important medical and dental care because she simply could not afford it.
Perhaps most heartbreaking of all, there were days when Debbie and her dogs went without food.
"Debbie has had one of the hardest stretches of life imaginable, and she's been carrying most of it alone," Spencer wrote.
The story might never have come to light if not for an observant Uber driver named Zach.
After helping Debbie carry groceries to her back door, Zach noticed how much she was struggling and reached out to SB Mowing, hoping someone could help.
What Spencer found was overwhelming.
The property had become so overgrown that weeds and grass towered overhead in some areas. The yard was in such rough condition that Spencer didn't even realize an air conditioning unit was hidden beneath the vegetation.
Determined to help, Spencer and his father spent two full days transforming the property. They cleared years of overgrowth, hauled away multiple trailer loads of debris, and restored order to a yard that had become impossible for Debbie to manage on her own.
But they didn't stop there.
To provide immediate financial relief, they purchased all of the items Debbie had gathered for a yard sale and donated them to Habitat for Humanity. That allowed her to receive money without the physical and emotional burden of running the sale herself.
Through SB Mow It Forward, they also paid her three months of overdue rent, removing one of the biggest sources of stress hanging over her.
Still, Spencer knew there was more work to be done.
A fundraiser was launched to help cover Debbie's medical expenses, dental care, everyday necessities, and eventually assist with a move to a senior living community when she is ready.
To protect Debbie and ensure the money is used for her care, all funds raised are being placed into a trust with Debbie as the sole beneficiary.
What started as one person noticing a neighbor in need has grown into a powerful reminder of what can happen when compassion meets action.
Thanks to an Uber driver who cared, a YouTuber willing to lend a hand, and thousands of generous supporters, Debbie's story is no longer one of hardship alone. It's now a story of hope, kindness, and a community coming together when someone needed it most.
