In Lakewood, 8-year-old Madeline Glynn heard something she loved drifting over the fence behind her home. Her neighbor was outside playing guitar. She wanted to make a request, but instead of interrupting or wandering into a stranger’s yard, she came up with a creative solution.

A paper airplane.

With help from her mom, Natalie Hulec, Madeline folded the plane and wrote a note asking for a song by Taylor Swift. Since paper airplanes can be tricky, she handed it off for launch. The note soared over the fence and landed in the yard next door.

On the other side was 26-year-old Ethan Hayes, a full-time musician who often plays on his porch. He spotted the unexpected delivery just as Madeline’s stepdad explained where it came from.

The request was simple. The response was immediate.

“He said it’s for Madeline, his daughter, and I’m playing on the porch,” Ethan said. “Am I going to say no? Absolutely not.”

Ethan picked up his guitar and began playing “Love Story.” He had to look up the lyrics, but Madeline didn’t miss a word. She sang along from her yard, creating a moment neither of them realized was about to reach far beyond their neighborhood.

Madeline’s mom recorded the interaction, just hoping to capture a sweet childhood memory. When she shared it online, it quickly took off, racking up millions of views and thousands of overwhelmingly positive comments.

“I didn’t know she was recording, I didn’t hear them singing along. I was just playing the song, but 2.7 million [views] is crazy,” Ethan said.

For Madeline, the next morning was unforgettable.

“I’m famous! I’m famous!” she told her family as the video continued to spread.

But what resonated most with viewers wasn’t the viral moment. It was the simplicity of it. A child reaching out. A stranger responding with kindness. No expectations, no agenda.

Ethan believes that’s why the moment struck such a chord.

“What are we if we don’t have each other?” he said. “Community is one of the most important things. As things get hard, it’s always nice to have somebody to lean on.”

The video has also brought unexpected attention to Ethan’s music, earning him thousands of new followers. For Madeline’s family, that’s been one of the most rewarding parts.

“The amount of attention he’s gained throughout this has been so rewarding,” Natalie said. “I’m so excited for him.”

Madeline’s stepdad summed it up in a way that’s hard to forget.

“Think about the little things. The little things make a big difference.”

Ethan agrees. For him, kindness isn’t complicated.

“It costs nothing to be kind,” he said. “I don’t care what my job is. I want to be a good person.”
