On a busy Miami street where most people keep their heads down and keep walking, one man stopped, and that simple choice may have saved a child’s life.

Late Wednesday evening, an unexpected hero emerged in Miami.

Arnett Johnson, who has been sleeping on a bench for months after serving time in prison, noticed something that didn’t sit right. A young boy was wandering alone near Seventh Avenue and Seventeenth Street, long after most children would be safely home.

“I’m looking around for the parent, but I looked and I don’t see nobody… so what is this kid doing out here seven at night?” Johnson recalled.

While many might have passed by, Johnson trusted his instincts. Realizing the situation could be dangerous, he called police and stayed by the child’s side until help arrived.

Officers later praised his quick thinking and compassion.

“This was a Good Samaritan that was sleeping in the streets and called us and gave us that information,” said Officer Mike Vega. “Kudos to him, as we don’t know what could have happened to this child if he would have remained out in the street.”

Investigators learned the boy had been missing for more than 12 hours. He told authorities that his mother had dropped him off and left him. She was arrested on charges of child neglect.

But in a story filled with concern, one detail shines through: a man with very little chose to give everything he could in that moment — his time, his attention, and his care.

Despite being unhoused and facing his own challenges, Johnson brushed off any praise.

“Anybody would have done the same thing I did,” he said.
