A life-saving gift from a stranger across the world turned into an unforgettable wedding moment.

At 33 years old, Kaedi Cecala was facing a diagnosis that wouldn’t simply go away. After years of unexplained low blood cell counts, she learned in 2020 that she had myelodysplastic syndrome—a condition where the bone marrow gradually stops producing the healthy blood cells the body needs. Without intervention, her health would continue to decline.

What she needed was a stem cell transplant—and a match.

Finding a donor can take time, sometimes years. But in Cecala’s case, something extraordinary happened. She officially entered the transplant system in August 2021, and by October, she got the news: a perfect match had been found.

“It was a young man from somewhere in Europe, and that is all I knew,” Cecala told People. “Who was this literal angel that would take the time out of his life to do something like this?”

She was overwhelmed by the idea that someone she had never met — someone who wasn’t being paid — had chosen to help save her life.

“My immediate reaction, truthfully, was shock and just an overwhelming amount of gratitude,” she said.

That “angel” turned out to be Karol Zwierzinski, a 25-year-old from Poland. When he received the call that he was a match, he stepped forward without hesitation.

After the donation, both of them were left with only the smallest details about each other. Zwierzinski knew just three things: the recipient was a woman, in her 30s, living in the United States.

“I was shocked that someone living so far away could have DNA so similar to mine,” he said. “At the same time, I was deeply moved and full of hope that my stem cells would engraft successfully and help her return to health.”

For a while, all they could do was wait.

Eventually, when the required waiting period ended, Cecala didn’t hesitate—she wanted to know the person who had given her a second chance. Zwierzinski reached out first in March 2025, opening the door to a connection that had already changed both of their lives.

Not long after, Cecala followed her heart and extended an invitation: would he come to her wedding?

He said yes.

Part 2. This is Karol. He donated his stem cells to a stranger in the US, so that I could have a future. Him and his beautiful wife Dominika flew in from their home in Poland to meet face to face for the first time at our wedding. We were able to pull off the most special and epic surprise for our guests. Because of him, I’m here. Because of him, I got married. Because of him, I get to live this life. The man who gave me my life… stood in the same room where we celebrated it. Gratitude doesn’t begin to cover this kind of gift The last piece will be announced tomorrow. I can’t wait to share 🤍 Grateful Cancer Stem cell transplant Stem cell donor Stem cell recipient Blood cancer MDS Bone marrow transplant Poland Wedding surprise My real life angel

In December 2025, Zwierzinski and his wife traveled to attend the celebration—turning what began as a life-saving medical procedure into a deeply personal, full-circle moment. A video capturing their emotional meeting at the wedding quickly spread online, drawing more than a million views.

During the reception, Zwierzinski addressed the crowd with a message that resonated far beyond the room.

“Somewhere out there your Kaedi may still be waiting,” he said, encouraging others to consider becoming donors.

Today, Cecala is in remission—and her story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the person who changes your life forever starts as a complete stranger.
