Doorbell Camera Captures Elderly Delivery Driver Struggling Up Stairs — Internet Raises Over $500K To Help Him Retire
March 13, 2026
What started as a simple food delivery quickly turned into a life-changing moment for a hardworking couple after a doorbell camera video of an elderly delivery driver struggling up a set of stairs inspired strangers around the world to donate more than $500,000.

The viral moment began when Brittany Smith of Manchester, Tennessee, noticed something unexpected while checking her Ring doorbell camera.
At first, she admits she was a little annoyed. Her daughter’s father had ordered Starbucks to the house again—something Smith said they usually try to reserve as a reward.
“So I see the Ring doorbell go off, and I'm like, you've got to be kidding me, he had Starbucks sent again,” Smith said.
But when she opened the video, her frustration quickly turned into concern.
The 20-second clip showed an elderly man slowly making his way up the steps to deliver the order. Dressed in a red shirt and khakis, he carefully held the railing as he climbed before placing the drink at the door.
“This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs to deliver my very capable daughter her Starbucks,” Smith said.

The driver was 78-year-old Richard, who asked that his last name not be shared. Smith later learned that he and his wife, Brenda, have continued working long past retirement age.
Richard began delivering for DoorDash after Brenda lost her job, leaving the couple needing extra income.
“I had a job and just losing that we had to supplement it. So I started running for DoorDash,” Richard explained.
The work helps cover daily expenses—including Brenda’s medication.
“It’s a medicine for kidney disease. I’m a diabetic and that’s what’s keeping me off of dialysis,” Brenda said.
Seeing the video, Smith first tried to make sure Richard received a larger tip through the app. When that wasn’t possible, she turned to social media, posting the clip in hopes someone might recognize him.
The response was immediate.
Within hours, the video had gone viral—eventually racking up more than 2.3 million views. Someone who regularly received deliveries from Richard recognized him and helped Smith identify the driver.
Determined to thank him personally, Smith tracked him down and showed up at his home with a $200 tip.
Before accepting it, Richard had one question.
“He wanted to make sure that I was going to be OK if he accepted that money from me,” Smith said.
After hearing more about the couple’s situation, Smith decided to take things a step further. She launched a GoFundMe called “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again.”
She never imagined what would happen next.
“I had no idea that I was going to gain that much traction,” she said.
Donations began pouring in from people who had seen the video and wanted to help. In just a short time, the fundraiser soared past half a million dollars with more than 12,000 people contributing.
The overwhelming support left the couple stunned.
“It’s just really difficult to believe that there’s that many people that are that generous to try to help us… people that don’t even know us,” Richard said.
Smith said the attention has been just as overwhelming for her.
“I’m floored,” she said, adding that she would “do it over again in a heartbeat.”
The fundraiser could allow Richard and Brenda something they haven’t had in years: the chance to slow down and rest.
In fact, Richard has been so amazed by the generosity that Smith says he hasn’t been able to stop checking the fundraiser page.
“Richard said he’s not slept in two days because he can’t quit watching the GoFundMe,” she said.
