Doctor Adopts Boy Who Came To Surgery Alone — Then Finds Loving Homes For His 5 Siblings

March 7, 2026

When Dr. Amy Beethe walked into a hospital room and saw a small boy preparing for heart surgery completely alone, she knew she couldn’t just walk away.

She ended up adopting the boy herself — and helping find loving homes for all five of his siblings.

When Dr. Beethe first met True, he was just four years old and sitting quietly in a hospital room at Children’s Nebraska.

The pediatric anesthesiologist immediately noticed something heartbreaking.

“He was sitting there all alone,” she said. “It took me back that this 4-year-old was going to go through heart surgery, and nobody was there.”

True had been born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS), a serious congenital heart defect.

Despite the frightening circumstances, True’s playful personality was already shining through. Just before surgery, Dr. Beethe thought he had fallen asleep under anesthesia. But when she lowered his mask, the little boy suddenly surprised her.

“He faked me out,” she said with a laugh. “I thought he was asleep, then I pulled down his mask, and he said, ‘Boo!’”

A Life-Changing Decision

After the surgery, Dr. Beethe couldn’t stop thinking about True.

“After I dropped True off in recovery, I called my husband and I just said, ‘We need to have a talk when we get home. I need you to have an open mind,’” she recalled.

Ryan Beethe agreed to meet the little boy.

“We went up and met True in the hospital and immediately fell in love with him,” Ryan said. “It wasn't long before we knew we needed him in our family.”

Within weeks, True was living with the Beethes. Eventually, the couple officially adopted him.

“He’s truly become my son,” Amy said. “I would battle for him like anybody else. When it comes to his health, I’m a mama bear, and I fight hard.”

One Boy… and Five More Lives Changed

But the story didn’t stop with True.

He had five siblings who were also living in difficult circumstances. Amy and Ryan knew they couldn’t adopt all of them—but they were determined to help.

So Amy started reaching out to the people she trusted most.

Her sister and brother-in-law adopted one sibling. Ryan’s brother and his wife adopted another. Two more siblings were welcomed by another anesthesiologist at Children’s Nebraska and her husband.

And the Beethes adopted one of True’s sisters themselves.

“We found a home for everyone,” Amy said. “It’s like one big extended family.”

A Life Filled With Love

Today, True is thriving in his new family.

He loves playing basketball and kickball with his siblings, even though he sometimes has to slow down when he gets short of breath.

“I like to go to the courts and play with my siblings,” he said.

Doctors say his strength inspires everyone around him.

“He’s a true inspiration to us all,” Dr. Cole said. “We get strength watching him go through his battles and seeing his successes as well.”

And through everything he’s faced, True has a simple outlook on life:

“Just keep going and don’t stop.”

Thanks to one doctor who refused to ignore a child sitting alone, True—and all of his siblings—now have the love and stability every child deserves.
