Teen Rushes Into Traffic To Save Trapped Couple — Then Gets The Surprise Of A Lifetime
January 21, 2026
On a rainy Wednesday afternoon in southern Texas, 19-year-old Juan Mendoza was driving with his girlfriend when he saw something terrifying unfold ahead of him. A car had been struck, spun out of control, and came to a stop in the middle of the highway.
While most drivers kept going, Juan didn’t hesitate.

“I thought they could have kids,” Mendoza later shared, thinking of his own younger brothers. “And I was like, I’m going to get them out.”
The car belonged to Juan O’Matta, who is about to turn 80, and his wife Adriana. They were on their way home from a doctor’s appointment when the crash sent their vehicle spinning into traffic. Smoke poured from the damaged car as they sat trapped inside.
Juan O’Matta remembers the moment clearly. “Nobody stopped,” he said. “He was the only one who stopped.”
Video from the scene shows Mendoza, who works as a cook at a Texas Roadhouse, running straight into the roadway. He pushed debris out of the way and helped pull the couple from their smoking vehicle, likely saving their lives.
“He was there at the right moment that we needed him,” Adriana said. “That’s why I say he was my angel.”
The O’Mattas never learned the young hero’s name at the scene. Determined to thank the man who saved their lives, they were eventually reunited with Mendoza with the help of CBS News contributor David Begnaud. Their emotional reunion took place at the Texas Roadhouse where Mendoza works and was filled with hugs, tears, and heartfelt gratitude.
The surprises didn’t stop there.
Justin Back, president of Acadian Ambulance Service, attended the reunion and offered Mendoza a life-changing opportunity: a scholarship to attend EMT school, along with a conditional job offer upon completion.
“We’re always looking for people—good people—who want to help others,” Back said. “That takes a big heart, intelligence, courage, and toughness. That’s a rare combination.”
