Xavier Dates was at home in Lynwood on Wednesday night with his daughter, Mia, enjoying a quiet evening. After checking on her upstairs, Dates headed back down the stairs. He slipped, fell down several steps, and hit his head on the wall.
Mia immediately knew something wasn’t right.
Seeing her dad on the ground and in pain, she grabbed his phone and called 911.
Paramedics Kevin and Bianca Rosas were among the first to arrive. They described the scene as hectic when they walked in, but one thing stood out right away: Mia’s calm focus.
"It was a pretty scary dog when we showed up, and right then and there it just causes a pretty hectic scene," Kevin told CBS News.
Despite the stress of the moment, Mia managed to secure the family dog in its cage, find the keys, unlock the door, and let the paramedics inside so they could reach her father without delay. The responders say her actions made a critical difference.
"If it wasn't for that girl, honestly, I don't know how long it would've taken to get to our patient," Kevin said.
Xavier was transported to the hospital and is now recovering well.
The paramedics say Mia’s actions are a powerful reminder of how important it is for children to know how to recognize an emergency and call for help. Mia explained that she learned what to do from her mom, who had previously taught her how to respond in situations like this.
Mia’s bravery didn’t go unnoticed. She was later visited by Lynwood’s mayor, along with local police and fire chiefs — and earned a very proud dad.
"I took it a little emotional, knowing that she was there for me," Xavier said.
