The incident unfolded Thursday afternoon after neighbors noticed smoke pouring from the woman’s home. They rushed over, knocked on the door, and tried to help her escape. When the elderly woman hesitated and struggled to get out safely, they flagged down a UPS driver who happened to be nearby.
Without hesitation, the driver stepped in, lifted the woman, and carried her out of the home to safety, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
While the rescue was underway, other neighbors worked to contain the fire. Using fire extinguishers, they managed to knock down flames in the kitchen. One neighbor, a roofer, even grabbed his ladder, climbed onto the roof, and used a garden hose to spray water into a kitchen vent to slow the spread.
Firefighters arrived shortly after and extinguished the blaze, which had already spread into the attic. The woman was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. Her condition has not been publicly released.
Fire officials praised the group effort, calling it “a remarkable outcome made possible by quick action, teamwork, and people looking out for one another in a moment of need.”
